In Mafra we have the largest and most important Baroque architectural complex in Portugal, comprising a Royal Palace, a Basilica, a Convent, and an 819-hectare park. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was commissioned by King João V in 1717 and immortalized by the writer José Saramago in his famous novel *Baltasar and Blimunda*.

Just nearby, the picturesque fishing village of Ericeira—once a summer retreat for many Lisboners—charms visitors with its white- and blue-washed houses, where fresh fish and seafood are served, and has been designated the world’s first surfing reserve.
